Thailand's economy depends heavily on exports, which account for more than two thirds of the country's gross domestic product (GDP). Thailand itself is a recently industrialized country.

Fishing is an important activity since Thailand is an important exporter of farmed shrimp.

The contribution of agriculture to GDP is decreasing, while exports of goods and services have increased.

The tertiary sector, including financial services, is increasing and contributes to 56.9% of GDP, which employs 46% of the active population.

Tourism plays an increasingly important role in the Thai economy. According to the Ministry of Tourism, Thailand received 35.8 million foreign visitors until November 2019.

The country has become one of the top 10 tourist destinations and China offers the largest number of tourists (28.8% of the total).

Thailand's main industries: Automobiles and auto parts (11%), financial services (9%), electrical appliances and components (8%), tourism (6%), cement, manufacturing cars, heavy and light industries, appliances, computers and parts, furniture, plastics, textiles and clothing, agricultural processing, beverages, tobacco.

Exports: $ 236.69 billion (year 2017).

Goods exported from Thailand: Machinery (23%), electronics (19%), food and wood (14%), chemicals and plastics (14%), automobiles and auto parts (12%), stone and glass (7% ), textiles and furniture (4%).

Imports: $ 222.76 billion (year 2017).

Goods imported into Thailand: Capital and intermediate goods, raw materials, consumer goods, fuels.
